Red Coconut Sambol with Maldive Fish | Jaffna Maasi Sambal

Have you ever tasted the red coconut sambol with Maldive fish? If not don’t miss this chance. Sri Lankans very often make this tasty sambol for bread, but you can have this with string hoppers, pittu, or rice as well. When you have all the below ingredients give it a try, you will like it for sure. A few days back I posted red chili coconut sambol for Dosa which went viral. So this time I am going to show you how to make the best red coconut sambol with Maldive fish. Alright, without talking much let’s jump into the recipe.

3. This Recipe + Rice + Chicken Curry + Dal Curry + Spring Onion Curry

Coconut Sambol with Maldive Fish

Ingredients
  • Grated coconut – 100g
  • Dried red chili – 8 to 12
  • Crushed Maldives fish – 2 tablespoons
  • Onion – 5 to 7 small
  • Sugar – ¼ teaspoon
  • Lime – ½
  • Salt – As you need
Instructions

1. Get ready with grated coconut and crushed Maldives fish.

2. Take dried red chilies, onion, salt, sugar, and lime.

3. Grind dried red chilies and salt together to flakes as shown in the picture below.

4. Wash the mortar and pestle. Add the grated coconut and ground dried red chili flakes. Bash and muddle them using a pestle until they combined well.

5. Now add sugar and bash them again.

6. Add the onions and bash them to a good mix. Don’t bash them for a long time because sambol will be tastier when onion pieces locate here and there.

7. Taste the sambol and adjust salt if needed.

8. Finally, add the crushed Maldives fish mix them well.

9. Now, take off all the mixture to a plate or bowl. Add the lime juice and mix everything well.

10. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style red coconut sambol with Maldive fish or Maasi Sambal(Tamil).

Notes

1. I used 10 dried red chilies. If you don’t like more spiciness you can reduce the number of dried red chilies.

2. Try to use small onions or shallots.
