Banana pepper curry is one of the delicious and unique dishes in Sri Lanka. There are various types of banana pepper dishes, but this particular dish is my favorite one. The spicy and sour taste of this dish gives a different experience in your tongue for sure. Spicy banana pepper curry is one of the top vegan dishes in Sri Lanka.
Is banana pepper good for your health? Yes, it is. Banana pepper is a natural mood booster for anyone. It is very rich in vitamin B6 which naturally promoting a positive mood. Besides, banana pepper aids in proper digestion, reduces symptoms of common colds, promotes faster weight loss, lowers blood pressure, and improves heart health. Apart from all, it’s a tasty vegan food.
Sri Lankans make this spicy banana pepper curry for lunch, but you can have this for dinner as well. Basically, people add banana pepper as a flavor popper on their meals, but I am going to show you a unique way to make banana pepper curry at home. Alright, let’s see how to make a spicy banana pepper curry recipe in Sri Lankan style.

Spicy Banana Pepper Curry Recipe
Ingredients
- Banana pepper – 200g
- Onion – 75g
- Garlic cloves – 4 to 6
- Curry leaves – Few
- Thin coconut milk – 250ml
- Thick tamarind juice – 50ml
- Curry powder – 1 ¼ tablespoons
- Mustard seeds – ¼ teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
- Salt – As you wish
- Cooking oil – As you wish
Instructions
1. Take the banana peppers and wash them well. In each banana pepper make two slits lengthwise, keeping the stem on as shown in the picture below.
2. Chop the onion and slice the garlic cloves. Also, get ready with curry leaves, mustard seeds, curry powder, turmeric powder, and salt. (Refer Note 1)
3. Get ready with the coconut milk and tamarind juice. (Refer Note 2)
4. Heat the oil in a cooking pan and place the banana peppers.
5. Fry them uncovered under medium flame. Make sure to fry every side of the banana peppers. For me, it takes about 3 minutes.
6. Now add curry leaves, onion, mustard seeds, and garlic. Stir and fry uncovered under medium flame for 2 to 4 minutes. (Refer Note 3)
7. Add curry powder, turmeric powder, and salt. (Refer Note 1)
8. Also, add tamarind juice.
9. Add coconut milk, stir, and mix them gently.
10. Cook covered under low flame for 4 to 6 minutes.
11. Take off the lid and taste the curry. Adjust salt if needed.

Notes
1. If you don’t like more spiciness, reduce the amount of curry powder.
2. I instantly made coconut milk from grated coconut. If it is hard to find grated coconut, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
3. You should give a good care while stirring as they can easily rip off.
