How To Make Spicy Crab Curry Recipe (Easy & Tasty Nandu Kuzhambu)

There were many people asked me how to make spicy crab curry recipe in Sri Lankan style? So this time I’m come up with delicious seafood dish as you wish. Crab curry is one of the tastiest dishes in Sri Lanka. Just like other seafood dishes, this spicy crab curry dish also a favorite dish for people who visited Sri Lanka. We Sri Lankans mostly cook seafood especially this crab curry with perfect spices and mixes. In Sri Lanka, crab is one of the top-wanted items on a seafood menu.

Is crab good for your health? Crab is low in fat and calories but it is very rich in protein. Yes, you can get a good amount of protein from meat but they are very high in fat. So crab is a good choice if you want to have a good amount of protein with very low saturated fat. Besides, crab is a good food for omega-3 polyunsaturated acids. There are many health benefits you can get from the crab. It protects the heart, detoxifies the body, increases cognition, eliminates inflammation, strengthens bones, boosts the mental activity, and Increase the blood circulation.

Basically, Sri Lankans cook this dish for lunch but you can have this for dinner as well. This particular curry is really good with rice, pittu, string hoppers, and bread. Alright, let’s see how to make spicy crab curry recipe at home in an easy and quick way.

How to Make Spicy Crab Curry Recipe

Ingredients
  • Crab – 700g (Before clean)
  • Onion – 100g
  • Garlic clove – 3 or 4
  • Ginger – Small (About the size of a garlic clove)
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Curry powder – 3 tablespoons
  • Fenugreek Seeds – ¾ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Salt – As you wish
  • Thin coconut milk – 400ml
  • Thin tamarind juice – 200ml
  • Cooking oil – As you want
Instructions

1. Take the crabs, clean, and rinse it well. Here is the way to clean the crab (Refer Note 1)

2. Chop the onion, slice the garlic, and mince the ginger as shown in the picture below. Also take some curry leaves as well.

3. Get ready with curry powder, turmeric powder, fenugreek seeds, and salt. (Refer Note 2)

4. Extract thin coconut milk from grated coconut and get ready with thin tamarind juice. (Refer Note 3)

5. Heat the oil in a cooking pan and add onions. Sauté it until it gets soft and translucent.

6. Add garlic and curry leaves. Stir and fry for about one minute.

7. Add fenugreek seeds. Stir and cook until the onion gets a golden color.

8. Now add the cleaned crabs.

9. Add tamarind juice.

10. Add salt, turmeric powder, and curry powder.

11. Now add the coconut milk. Mix everything well.

12. Cook covered under the high flame for 7 to 9 minutes.

13. Open the lid and mix well. Again cook covered under low flame for 5 to 7 minutes.

14. Taste the gravy and adjust salt if needed.

15. Finally, switch off the flame and add the minced ginger. Mix one last time.

Notes

Note 1: I break the crabs into the half. But you can use the whole crabs as well.

Note 2: If you don’t like more spiciness, reduce the amount of curry powder.

Note 3: I instantly made coconut milk from grated coconut. If it is hard to find, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
