Easy Sri Lankan Chickpea Breakfast | Simple Vegan Kadalai Recipe

Have you ever tried Sri Lankan chickpea breakfast or Sri Lankan Kadalai Sundal at your kitchen? If not, here is the right time to give it a try on this healthy delicious breakfast. Today, I am going to show you a simple way to make Sri Lankan chickpea breakfast at home.

Chickpea is one of the well-known breakfast dishes in Sri Lanka. It is not only delicious but also a healthy Sri Lankan vegan dish.

People make this tasty chickpea tempered salad in different ways and this is one of the easiest ways to make.

Usually, Sri Lankans prepare this dish for breakfast, but you can have this for lunch or dinner as well.

Easy Sri Lankan Chickpea Breakfast | Simple Vegan Kadalai Recipe

Simple Sri Lankan Chickpea Breakfast Recipe

Ingredients
  • Chickpeas – 250g
  • Water – As needed
  • Onion – 150g
  • Dried red chili – 2 or 3
  • Mustard seeds – ½ teaspoon
  • Salt – As you want
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Cooking oil – As you want
Notes

1. When boiling the chickpeas in a pressure cooker, I used 750ml of water and wait till 8 whistles.
2. If you don’t like more spiciness reduce the number of dried red chilies.
3. In the end, you can add tomato sauce and/or lime juice and/or crushed black pepper according to your taste. I haven’t added anything though.

Instructions

1. Take the chickpeas and soak them overnight in the water. Then wash them thoroughly at least 2 or 3 times.

2. Now add chickpeas, salt, and water in a pressure cooker and cook them until chickpeas turn tender. I leave them to cook until 8 whistles in the pressure cooker.

3. Once done, leave the pressure cooker to remain covered until it comes to room temperature. Then open the lid and strain the water completely using a colander. Besides, slice the onion, dried red chilies, and curry leaves as shown in the picture below. Also, get ready with mustard seeds and cooking oil.

4. Heat the oil and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter. Then add onion, dried red chili, and curry leaves. Sauté them till onion start turns to golden.
