Tasty Prawn Varai Recipe | Unique Shrimp (Eral) Dish | KETO

You may have tried a variety of prawn/shrimp dishes, but have you ever tasted a unique shrimp dish called prawn varai? If not, here is the right time to experience the taste of this delicious dish. Today, I am going to show you how to make a tasty prawn varai recipe in Sri Lankan style.

Prawn varai, also known as ‘Eral Varai’ in Tamil is one of the famous dishes among Sri Lankans, especially among the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.

It is one of the easiest yet tastiest prawn dishes. Once you taste this shrimp varai, I am sure that you will make it very often.

Since it is keto-friendly, KETO people can have this simple seafood dish.

People cook this simple seafood recipe for lunch, but you can have this for dinner as well.

Alright, let’s see how to make a Sri Lankan style delicious prawn varai at home.

Easy Prawn Varai Recipe

Ingredients
  • Prawn/Shrimp – 125g (After peeling off the skin)
  • Grated coconut – 100g
  • Onion – 50g
  • Red chilies – 4 or 5
  • Garlic paste – ½ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Crushed cumin seed – ¼ teaspoon
  • Water – 50ml
  • Salt – As you want (KETO people use the Himalayan Pink Salt)
Instructions

1. Take the prawns, peel off the skin, and rinse them well.

2. Get ready with dried red chilies, onions, turmeric powder, salt, and water.

3. Likewise, get ready with grated coconut, crushed cumin seeds, and garlic paste.

4. Take the skillet and add the prawns. On top of that add dried red chilies, onions, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Give a mix and switch on the flame.

5. Cook covered under medium flame till all the water evaporates or the prawns boiled well enough. For me, it takes about 4 minutes. Once done, let them cool down to room temperature.

6. Now grind them to a paste as shown in the picture below. You don’t need to grind them to a smooth paste.

7. Place the skillet over the stove and add the ground paste, grated coconut, crushed cumin seeds, and garlic paste. Mix everything well until totally combined. Now switch on the flame.

8. Cook this mixture uncovered under medium flame for 5 to 7 minutes. Mix and stir frequently to avoid burning.

Notes

1. I used small onions/shallots which makes this dish more special. If it is hard to find shallots use the large onions.

2. If you don’t like spiciness, reduce the number of dried red chilies according to your taste.
