Here I come with yet another fish curry recipe. This time, I’m going to show you how to make fish curry recipe without tomato and cooking oil. A few weeks ago, I posted a fish curry recipe with cooking oil. It went viral, but some people asked me to post a fish curry recipe without a single drop of oil. So this time I completely avoid cooking oil and make it healthier than the fish curry with cooking oil recipe.
Basically, fish is good for your health. Nowadays, doctors recommend seafood, especially fish rather than other red meats. Fish is very rich in protein and vitamin D. Besides, fish is the world’s best source of omega-3 fatty acids. Eating fish is lower your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, having fish prevents you from asthma, cancer, and diabetes. It is good for your skin, hair, brain development, and eyesight. This is how fish provides you lots of health benefits. Apart from all, this particular recipe doesn’t contain a single drop of cooking oil, so you are in a safe side from cooking oil health issues.
Mostly, Sri Lankans cook fish curry without tomato. But only a few people cook fish without oil. This particular fish curry dish is the best combination with rice, pittu, string hoppers or bread. Of course, this is a healthy dish, but more than a healthy dish, it is very easy to cook. Alright, let’s see how to cook Sri Lankan style simple fish curry recipe without tomato and oil in a quick way.

Simple Fish Curry Recipe without Tomato and Oil
Ingredients
- Fish – 400g
- Onion – 50g
- Green chili – 2 or 3
- Garlic cloves – 3 or 4
- Curry leaves – Few
- Curry powder – 2 tablespoons
- Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
- Fenugreek seeds – ¼ teaspoon
- Thin coconut milk – 200ml
- Tamarind juice – 150ml
- Salt – As you need
Instructions
1. Take the pieces of fish and rinse it well at least 2 or 3 times. Here I used the pieces of Grey Mullet fish.
2. Chop the onions, slice the green chilies, and slice the garlic cloves. Also, take fey curry leaves, turmeric powder, fenugreek seeds, salt, and curry powder. Keep everything aside. (Refer Note 1)
3. Get ready with coconut milk and tamarind juice. (Refer Note 2)
4. Place the cooking pan on the stove. Add turmeric powder, curry powder, salt, and fenugreek seeds.
5. Also, add chopped onions, green chilies, garlic cloves, and curry leaves.
6. Now add tamarind juice.
7. Add the coconut milk.
8. Mix everything and switch on the flame.
9. Cook covered under the high flame for 6 to 8 minutes.
10. Take off the lid, stir, and mix well. Stir gently, otherwise, the flesh part of the fish can easily rip off.
11. Again cook covered under low flame for 5 to 7 minutes. (Refer Note 3)
12. Take off the lid and taste the curry. Adjust salt and tamarind juice if needed.
13. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style easy fish curry recipe without tomato and cooking oil.
Notes
Note 1: This dish is not too spicy. But if you don’t like more spiciness, reduce the amount of curry powder.
Note 2: I instantly made coconut milk from grated coconut. If it is hard to find grated coconut, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
Note 3: If you don’t like thick curry, it’s enough to cook under low flame for 3 to 4 minutes.
