Green Moong dal, also known as Green gram or Payaru in Tamil is one of the healthiest foods in Sri Lanka. People in Sri Lanka often make this green moong dal recipe. This particular dish is not only a healthy one but also a tasty recipe. Since it doesn’t contain any spiciness, kids would like to have this healthy vegetarian dish.
Why do we consider green moong dal as a healthy food? Green moong dal or green gram dal is very rich in protein, iron, fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. Besides, it is a good source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, folate, and vitamin B. Green moong dal is good for age-related deceases, including heart decease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. So it is good to eat this healthy pea or lentil very often.

Green Moong Dal Recipe with Coconut Milk
Ingredients
- Green Moong Dal – 50g
- Water – 400ml + 100ml
- Thin coconut milk – 200ml
- Small onion – 4 to 6
- Red chili – 2 or 3
- Garlic cloves – 2 or 3
- Mustard seeds – ¼ teaspoon
- Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
- Fennel seeds – ¼ teaspoon
- Curry leaves – Few
- Salt – As you need
- Cooking oil – As you need
Instructions
1. Take a bowl and add Green Moong Dal/Green Gram/Payaru(Tamil). Add 400ml water and leave it to soak overnight.
2. Next day drain the water and rinse the green moong dal thoroughly.
3. Now add the soaked green moong dal and 100ml of water in a pressure cooker. Add some salt as well. Cook this until the pressure cooker whistles 4 or 5 times. (Refer Note 1)
4. Get ready with crushed garlic cloves, chopped onions, sliced red chilies, curry leaves, turmeric powder, fennel seeds, mustard seeds, and salt. (Refer Note 2)
5. Extract thin coconut milk from grated coconut. The following picture is showing the water which I used when I boiled the green moong dal in a pressure cooker. (Refer Note 3)
6. Now place the cooking pan on the stove and add the boiled green moong dal. Mash it with the spoon, but don’t mash it too much.
7. Add turmeric powder and thin milk. Mix everything well.
8. Now switch on the stove and cook covered under the high flame for 2 or 3 minutes.
9. Take off this curry in a bowl and add the crushed garlic cloves in it. Mix it well and keep aside for the final preparation.
10. Heat the oil in cooking pan and add mustard seeds. Let it splutter.
11. Add the onions and sauté until it gets softened.
12. Now add red chilies, curry leaves, and fennel seeds. Stir and cook until the onion turns into golden color.
13. Now add the cooked green moong dal curry.
14. Mix everything well and taste it. Add salt if needed.
15. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style simple green moong dal recipe with coconut milk.
Notes
Note 1: The number of whistles may vary. I always cook the green moong dal till 4 whistles.
Note 2: I used small onions. But you can use large onion if you want. Also, if you don’t like even a little spiciness, you can avoid red chilies.
Note 3: If it is hard to find grated coconut, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
