Simple Spring Onion Flower Recipe | Vengaya Thal Poo Varai

Have you ever tried spring onion flower recipe? There are many ways to make spring onion flower curry. The one I’m going to show you is the most common way Sri Lankan people do. This Sri Lankan style spring onion flower recipe with grated coconut is very tasty and easy to make. It is one of the most common vegan dishes we often make for lunch.

Is spring onion flower healthy? Yes, it is. Spring onion is rich in vitamin A, C, K, and B2. Besides, it is a good source of copper, phosphorous, magnesium, and potassium. Eating spring onion flower curry is good for your cardiovascular system, controls the blood pressure, reduces the cholesterol level, fight against cold and flu, boosts the immunity system, protects from skin wrinkling, and good for the eyesight. This is how spring onion flower helps you in various ways.

Basically we Sri Lankans cook this healthy vegan dish for lunch. It is a good combination with rice and other curries. Grated coconut is one of the main ingredients for this recipe. If it is hard to find grated coconut in your area, it is better to forget about this dish. Alright, let’s see how to make simple spring onion flower recipe with grated coconut in Sri Lankan style.

How to Make Spring Onion Flower Recipe

Ingredients
  • Spring onion flower – 250g
  • Grated coconut – 2 tablespoons
  • Onion – 40g
  • Green chili – 2 or 3
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Salt – As you wish
  • Cooking oil – 1 tablespoon
Instructions

1. Take the spring onions flower/Vengaya thal poo.

2. Chop that into small pieces as shown in the picture below. Wash it well at least 2 or 3 times. (Refer Note 1)

3. Chop the onion and green chili. Also, get ready with grated coconut, turmeric powder, and salt. (Refer Note 2)

4. Add the chopped spring onion flower in the cooking pan. Also, add green chili, onion, salt, and turmeric powder.

5. Now add one tablespoon of cooking oil.

6. Mix them well and switch on the flame.

7. Cook covered under the high flame for 3 to 5 minutes.

8. Open the lid and cook uncovered under medium flame until the spring onion flower gets little fry. During this time you may stir and mix occasionally to avoid burn. For me, it takes 4 minutes.

9. Finally, add grated coconut, mix, and cook uncovered under low flame for one minute.

10. Taste the curry and add salt if needed.

11. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style simple spring onion flower recipe with grated coconut.

Note 1: When you chop the spring onion flower, avoid the flower part.

Note 2: If it is hard to find grated coconut, forget about this recipe because grated coconut is the main ingredient in this dish.
