Deep Frying Shrimp with Cornstarch | Unique Prawns Fry

Have you ever tried a Sri Lankan style deep frying shrimp with cornstarch? If not, this is the right time to give it a try on this unique dish. Today, I am going to show you the best way to prepare a unique deep frying shrimp with cornstarch in Sri Lankan style.

Shrimp is one of the favorite seafoods around the world, people prepare a variety of dishes using it.

This unique recipe is one of the tastiest dishes using shrimp you can prepare at home.

Usually, Sri Lankans make this deep-fried shrimp fry for lunch, but you can have this for dinner as well.

Alright, let’s see how to cook the best deep frying shrimp with cornstarch in Sri Lankan style.

1. This Recipe + Vegetable Fried Noodles + Shrimp Curry + Shrimp Varai

Deep Frying Shrimp with Cornstarch

Ingredients

For Shrimp

  • Shrimp/Prawn – 250g (after clean)
  • Garlic paste – ½ tablespoon
  • Ginger paste – ½ teaspoon
  • Semi thick tamarind juice – 2 tablespoons
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Chili powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Water – 100ml
  • Salt – As you want

For Coating Batter

  • All-purpose flour – 75g
  • Cornstarch – 2 tablespoons
  • Garlic paste – 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger paste – ½ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Baking powder – ¼ teaspoon
  • Sugar – ¼ teaspoon
  • Water – 150ml
  • Salt – As you need
Notes

1. I instantly made ginger and garlic pastes. If it’s hard, use the bottled one.
2. Large shrimps are good for this particular dish.
3. You can add food coloring in the batter if you wish.
4. Let the oil heat up its maximum before adding each batch of shrimps.

Instructions

1. Rinse the shrimps well enough and peel off its skins except the tail portion as shown in the picture below.

2. Prepare the ginger garlic paste and tamarind juice. Besides, get ready with water, turmeric powder, chili powder, and salt.

3. Place the cooking pan on the stove and add shrimps. On top of that, add turmeric powder, chili powder, ginger-garlic paste, tamarind juice, water, and salt. Give a mix and switch on the flame.

4. Cook covered under the high flame until shrimps cooked and all the liquid evaporates as shown in the picture below. In a halfway through, take off the lid and give a stir. For me, it takes about 15 minutes.

5. Now, take the flour, cornstarch, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, baking powder, sugar, water, and salt.

6. Put everything in a large bowl and mix thoroughly using your fingers till you get a smooth batter as shown in the picture below.

7. Let the batter coat the shrimps by sweeping the shrimps here and there as shown in the picture below.

8. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan and fry the batter coated shrimps under the high flame until they turn to golden.
