Make Drumstick Coconut Curry Recipe | Murungakkai Paal Curry

Drumstick coconut curry or murungakkai paal curry (In Tamil) is one of the favorite vegetarian dishes in Sri Lanka and India.

Few people make spicy drumstick curry which is also a tasty dish. Since kids don’t like spiciness, this drumstick coconut milk curry is a good alternative for them.

People in Sri Lanka not only make drumstick curry but also make a healthy dish from drumstick leaves. Drumstick leaves are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals and they are rich in antioxidants.

Basically, people make this delicious drumstick coconut curry for lunch, but you can have this for dinner as well. Alright, let’s see how to make the best drumstick coconut curry or murungakkai paal curry in Sri Lankan style.

Drumstick Coconut Curry Recipe

Ingredients
  • Drumsticks – 2 large
  • Onion – 50g
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Green chili – 1 or 2
  • Salt – As you need
  • Turmeric powder – ½ teaspoon
  • Thin coconut milk – 200ml
  • Thick coconut milk – 100ml
Instructions

1. Take the drumstick and peel off the skin as shown in the picture below.

2. Cut the drumsticks into 3-inch pieces and rinse them well. I use them as whole drumstick pieces, but you cut them into half if you wish.

3. Place the drumstick pieces in a cooking pot. Then add curry leaves, sliced green chilies, and chopped onions.

4. Add turmeric powder, salt, and thin coconut milk. Mix everything well.

5. Switch on the flame and cook covered under the high flame for 5 to 7 minutes till drumsticks turn tender.

6. Take off the lid and add the thick coconut milk and again cook covered under medium flame for 2 to 4 minutes.

7. Taste and adjust the salt if needed.

8. This is how to make drumstick coconut curry. Serve and enjoy this Sri Lankan style drumstick coconut milk curry.

Notes

1. Don’t add more salt, because drumsticks already have some saltiness.

2. I used instantly made coconut milk from grated coconut. If it is hard to find grated coconut, you can use coconut milk powder or bottled coconut milk.
