7 Reasons Why Cooking Should Be Taught in Schools

As a parent, have you ever thought of teaching cooking skills to your kids? If not, it is the right time to think about it seriously. It is even great if the schools consider teaching cooking skills to kids. There are many reasons why cooking should be taught in schools. If schools failed to do that, as a parent, it is your responsibility to teach your kid some basic cooking skills.

Cooking should be considered as art just like any other activity which requires skills and expertise.

Sometimes the cooking process is accompanied by the risk of burning, cutting, or general kitchen mess. However, these factors shouldn’t hinder schools from depriving their students of the cooking experience.

In this busy world, people don’t have time to cook at home, thus they buy food at restaurants or street shops. The practice of buying food outside is not good for your health, even doctors advise stopping this practice.

The key to a healthy body is a healthy diet and to prepare a deliciously healthy diet you need to possess excellent kitchen skills. This is why it is of great importance and the following reasons will explain the reason as to why cooking should be taught in schools.

Why Cooking Should Be Taught In Schools?

1. Cooking is an important skill in life
Schools are supposed to impart knowledge to the students so that they can lead successful independent lives when they are out of school. Also, they can step into the world without having to depend on others for basic survival. So many young people of the millennial era have no idea how to prepare something that is not packaged in a box with the instructions like adding water or placing it in the microwave to prepare.

The cooking skills shouldn’t be learned when the kids are already out of school. Introducing cooking lessons in school will cover the basics of cooking and will allow the students to be talented cooks.

2. People are more likely to eat what they prepare
When students and kids are taught at an early age in school how to cook, they develop the habit of preparing their food even when they are at home. This is because they tend to take more responsibility for the food they are cooking which matters very much to them.

Since they have prepared their meals, they will be curious to taste what they cooked, thus consuming the food.

3. Students practice at home
When taught in schools about the procedures and the different methods of preparing food the learners give it a more serious approach like the ones they give to other subjects like math. This will prompt them to shift their skills and take them home where they will practice further.

Regular home practice on the skills learned at school will produce good cooks which wouldn’t be so if they learned how to cook while at home.

4. Cooking at school changes the student’s mindset
Students or kids who are used to processed readymade food will have a problem with their eating habits.

When the schools teach how to cook, the concept of food to them changes, and instead of perceiving it as a finished good, the students see every ingredient that is used to prepare a meal. As they get used to preparing their various types of food and eating them, they will shift their focus from processed foods which they have no guarantee of their preparation, and begin to embrace cooked food.

5. Discovery of cooking career
When schools offer cooking lessons and students begin to embrace the art of cooking, this might trigger an interest in some students to take cooking as a career. This will give them the chance to perfect their basic skills and offer a platform for creativity in the kitchen.

The skills learned in school will then be of great benefit when one decides to open a diner or seek employment as a chef.

6. Cooking promotes a healthy lifestyle
It is a fact that fast food joints are popular among students regardless of the truth that these takeaway joints usually serve unhealthy foods. Just one slice of pizza can contain more than 300 calories which are unhealthy for the body.

When students learn how to cook at schools they can cook for themselves and determine the type of ingredients to use and whether the ones they are using to cook are organic or not. Students will also be able to learn how to maximize the value of nutrients.

Students can be given a recipe to prepare their favorite dish which will help them prepare a healthy diet compared to the ones they buy.

7. Cooking saves money
One of the main reasons why cooking should be taught in schools is that the students tend to use a lot of money in buying readymade food, while in the real sense they could prepare a nice meal with less cost by buying the required ingredients.

According to a report by BBC food magazine, students of 16-24 years spend approximately GBP 63  (USD 88) every week buying food, as compared to adults who spend approximately GBP 57 (USD 79). This is a clear reason why cooking should be taught in schools.

Due to these reasons, the government should consider the introduction and implementation of cooking as a subject like the other subjects learned in schools today. The students should also embrace the practice due to the benefit it imparts to them especially when they leave school.
